I have this weird vivid memory of watching the news right after the Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta where the newscaster described the bomb, including the reams of nails thought to have been taped around the outside of the bombs. I was 10, I liked war movies and understood what shrapnel was, but it still took some explanation from my dad so that I could understand the intent of the nails. I was horrified at the malice.

We are launching 13 foot long, 2,000 lb, $2million shrapnel bombs into residential areas of Iran. War analysts can’t even figure out the intended target. It feels like the tactics of terrorism.

it's possible to be against war in general, to be against this war in particular, to be against the way trump has waged this war, and to still acknowledge that the US and Iran at one point had friendly relations and it wasn't the US who decided to become belligerent against the other

I actually agree with TGL.

The ONLY reason we would’ve had to go to war with Iran would have been their nuclear program. But hey, I thought we completely obliterated Iran’s nuclear capabilities last year, did we not? I clearly recall Trump’s gloats.

I thought this was only going to last a few weeks. We’re at what, month 6? 7?

What has been the economic impact to the Middle East because of this war? Sounds to me like Iran is making everybody suffer. Outside of Israel, we have zero allies here. As a matter of fact, we have LOST allies over this.

Are you saying the CIA didn't help stage the coup? Because the CIA seems to think they did:

the CIA did help prop up the Shah. I know it's fashionable to hate everything the US ever does, but let's not pretend that Mossadegh was a paragon of democratic virtue either.

this is what I said and what I'm still saying. There were no perfect options because there never are. There is only Reality and the constraints that do actually exist in the world. Supporting the Shah was better than letting a wannabe dictator Mossadegh get away with his attempted coup. And supporting the Shah was better than letting a wannabe dictator Khomenei get away with his attempted coup. Everything you could possibly accuse the Shah of being less than a perfectly virtuous ruler, the ayatollahs and the IRGC have been FAR worse in every way.

I still don't think any of that changes the fact that the coup was to protect US and UK financial interests. That pissed a lot of Iranians off, and to pretend that US and Iran animosity simply began with the 1970s hostage crisis seems rather dishonest to me. A big chunk of the public sentiment after the coup was that the US and UK were stealing Iranian oil. That strikes me as a belligerent act, whether the US thought they were justified in doing that or not.

I'm not trying to condone or condemn the US/UK involvement in the coup here, I'm just stating that there is no question many considered it a belligerent act. I don't think "belligerence" has an objective definition, so you can't simply ignore that, in my opinion.

so when putin seized hundreds of billions of dollars of assets in Russia from western companies after he invaded ukraine, did any of them protest? was that legitimate? would you have objected if putin got couped and replaced with a more reasonable russian leader?

just bc mossadegh threw a tantrum about "stolen" oil (aka multi-decade contractual agreements that both the Qajar and the Pahlavi dynasties agreed to and were compensated for) and then whipped up his attempt at a january 6th with claims of stolen election oil to try to overthrow the constitutionally recognized ruler of iran, doesn't make him a righteous crusader. it makes him a thug who got popular bc he's good at convincing the downtrodden that somebody else is to blame for their hardships, but ultimately doesn't know what he's talking about and is in over his head. but it doesn't matter bc he knows how to be charming in front of a camera or a newspaper reporter. the kind of politician you'd more easily recognize as a phony thug if it happened today. the only question then is what can or should our leaders do about it when they try to steal from you, or from your friends and allies? maybe it's better to let them get away with it, eat your losses and you just don't do business with them anymore. if we can't get rid of putin when he steals, that's realpolitik. if we can't get rid of xi when he steals, that's realpolitik. if we could get rid of mossadegh, that's realpolitik. it's all realpolitik. principles when you can, but realpolitik when you must. at the end of the day it's all protecting your interests when half the world is down to play by the rules and the other half still hasn't caught up yet. you can call it belligerence if you want, but that's just framing. realpolitik also happens to be how many people can you convince of your preferred framing. doesn't mean you're right. learning can help make you right. doesn't mean you won't be defeated by the liars and thugs, but you'll at least be right.

Again, that is one side. This is another side to the story:

Quote :
"This video exposes the "Oil Heist" of the century. We break down how Britain used a rigged concession signed in 1901 to drain Iran of its wealth for 50 years. While the British government collected millions in taxes from the company, Iran received a meager 16% of the "Net Profits"—a number that British accountants manipulated to ensure Iran stayed poor while London rebuilt itself."
