2/25/2026 12:50:51 PM
I’ve always wondered about profit margins of bars that server alcohol. My ignorant view is that bar owners are making money hand over fist, because let’s say you pay retail for a bottle of Absolut, which in NC is I guess about 22 right now? One bottle is good for about 25 shots. Let’s say you put two shots of absolut in your mixed drinks. That’s roughly 12 drinks. Say you go cheapish and charge 10 per cocktail - That’s 120 from one bottle of Vodka. Now throw in your liquors and mixes, that profit margin goes down but - you can make a bottle of liquor last a lot longer because not as much volume is needed. So in other words, you rich? Can you break down the highs and lows of bar ownership? I’d like think you guys run it like ASIP
2/25/2026 1:07:59 PM
You're forgetting the overhead costs of all the drugs
2/25/2026 1:16:55 PM
definitely not rich, but we do okand there are a lot more factors that go into the cost of cocktails/beer than just the alcohol itself (it’s also illegal to put two shots of liquor into a drink )there’s also a ton more that goes into being a successful bar/restaraunt than just opening the doors and serving food and drinks. each bar/restaurant is different, and success can look entirely different from bar-to-bar. we’re unique in that we have generations of regulars, and that first-timers genuinely seem to dig what we’re about. that takes a lot of work that wouldn’t seem obvious to the outside. the highest compliment we get from new customers is, “this feels like home”, and that can come from people who just moved to NC or people who are in town for a convention/concert/event. that and “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore”[Edited on February 25, 2026 at 1:50 PM. Yea, I get all the other overhead costs. But the margins on the alcohol alone seems nice. Also, I didn't realize it was illegal to put more than one shot in a drink. I'm assuming this is of the same type? Because what about LIT's? There has to be at least 4 oz of booze in one of those.
2/25/2026 2:09:18 PM
a double pour is a shot and a half, the maximum amount of a legal pourlegal LIT’s contain a small pour of each liquor
2/25/2026 2:13:33 PM
What's the name of your hometown bar so that I can support you? Mitch's Tavern?
2/25/2026 6:26:03 PM
