It was being installed on their car.

I was recently passed by two cars on the interstate that literally had explosive exhaust sounds. The first car happened to explode right beside my driver's front tire and I assumed my tire just blew and I was about to have a wreck (this was before I knew the actual source). The cars continued their percussive blasts which were audible I would say several hundred yards ahead. This can't be legal, and it's certainly not safe for crowded public roadways.

Also, some tuners these days actually tune their cars to backfire, that's what you heard. It's dumb as fuck, but only slightly better than doing crack or whatever.
